Sue Ann Gunkel, inspirational teacher

Sue Ann Gunkel taught math for more than 30 years, first at Northern Kentucky University and then at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, and was known as an inspirational teacher.

"She inspired students to work their hardest and do their best. She gave people the tools they needed to better themselves," said Ms. Gunkel's son, Brad Gunkel of Albany, Calif.

She was a member of the Life Club and Big Brothers and Big Sisters at Notre Dame Academy. She was a volunteer with the Cincinnati Zoo, a member of the 30 Plus Catholic Singles at St. Monica-St. George Church in Cincinnati and a member of Tri-State Volunteers.

"She was very active in the community and in Catholic organizations," said her son. "She volunteered to help feed the homeless.

"She was somebody who lived for others - to help them out and empower them. She appreciated the interests of others. She thought it was important to give people the resources they needed to do the best in life they could.

"She helped give people the moral backbone they needed to do good things in life."

Ms. Gunkel was cheerful and energetic, her son said. She loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hiking, biking, rollerblading and tennis.

"She had a goal to visit and hike all the national parks," said her son. "She didn't make that goal, but she made it to many of the parks."
